Deep in the heart of Kenya, I am acutely aware of two obvious realities. One, my African brothers and sisters are strikingly beautiful, and two, the physical needs in this rural village are blatantly abundant. How then can it be that I am also surrounded by so much exuberant joy?
Through my mission trips to Kenya and my own study of God’s word, I have discovered the possibility and power of living with joy. Unlike happiness, joy doesn’t come and go depending on the surrounding circumstances. Rather, joy is the umbrella sheltering and protecting our lives. Joy is like a pair of sunglasses that we choose to put on in order to see God more clearly despite the blinding brightness of our harsh world. Joy pierces through the pain and delivers a glimpse of who God is amidst the hurt, sadness, and sorrow.
